Hungary Information

Hungary  is a land with an aura of a rich European past continually mingling with the
present yet striving to influence the future. This is Hungary. Also known as
Magyarország, the country of the Magyar.

Lying at the heart of continental Europe, Hungary is a landlocked nation that shares
borders with seven states.  Hungary has a unique identity.  It is located neither in
Western Europe nor in Eastern Europe.  We consider ourselves to be located 'in the
heart of Europe'.  Currently 10 million people live within the borders of Hungary, while
almost 25% live in the region of our capital city, Budapest.

The Hungarian people live in a charming land rich with intriguing history and captivating
culture.  Migrating from the Ural Mountains 1,100 years ago under the leadership of
King Arpad, we settled in the fertile farmland at the base of the Carpathian Mountains.

We are a proud people with a rich cultural and linguistic heritage.  Our culture is very
unique and throughout the centuries has withstood the incursions of many outside
governments and religions.  Our language is also unique.  It is based upon a system of
word-endings and considered by many to be one of the most challenging languages
worldwide.

"... forget about all that you heard before about Europe, about Eastern Central Europe,
because Hungary is totally different from everything you ever imagined.  It is totally
different from America, it is totally different from the rest of the Western countries or any
other country.  Hungary is a unique country."
 - Csaplar Jozsef

We have a great love and appreciation for the arts.  Opera houses and theatres can be
found all across the country. We also have great respect for
history and for those who
played significant roles in defining the
distinct features of Hungarians.

And yet, despite all of the rapid changes taking place in modern-day central Europe, we
have managed to cling to many of their long-held
values and customs.  One key
foundational value in Hungarian culture is the
family.

Education is also of the utmost value in Hungarian culture.  The literacy rate currently
stands at 99%.  Most of us are avid readers.  People can be seen reading books or
magazines in parks, at coffee shops, on buses, trains, and the Metro.  News stands
and bookstores are everywhere.  Social status, identity and financial security are also
among the highly esteemed values in
modern-day Hungarian culture.

Recent History

A turbulent 20th century history has caused much damage to the overall mentality of the
people.  Following World War I, we lost 60% of our land to neighboring countries at the
break-up of the Austro-Hungarian Empire; and following World War II, a
Soviet-orchestrated coup brought the Communist party to power resulting in over 40
years of Marxist control behind the wall of the infamous Iron Curtain.

"Before the big political changes up until the 80s, we were in serious imprisonment.
Because of this, people were not able to do many things that they wanted to do.  They
were forced to give things up and hold themselves back."
 - Macher Tivadar

In 1989, however, Hungary played a significant role in the collapse of the Iron Curtain
and in 1990 became the first Communist bloc state to officially abandon Marxism; thus
freeing the way for a new, democratically elected government.

"Suddenly, it was possible to do anything.  You could bring anything into the country
and take anything out of the country.  It was possible to say whatever you wanted."

Current Situation - Strong Economic Outlook

Hungary has been the most successful of the former eastern bloc countries in
attracting foreign direct investment. Hungary continues to demonstrate strong
economic growth.

Since 1989 direct foreign investment totals more than $23 billion.
Inflation and unemployment have both reduced drastically in the recent past. There are
some 30,000 firms with foreign capital currently operating in Hungary.

All the economic indicators for continued growth look healthy.
The country accessed the EU on May 1, 2004.
Hungary enjoys stable western style government, has a well-educated population and
superb infrastructure.

Hungary has attracted the most foreign direct investment of any region in Eastern
Europe. Although
property prices in Hungary's capital, Budapest, have taken quite a
hike in recent years, they remain low by West-European standards. All property is
freehold and there is a very modern and well-run
land registry system.
